The Wheelers

About

"The first step is always hard to take" - the Budapest based hardcore-punk-rock band The Wheelers is proof to that statement. If you count releasing a record the first step for a band, for The Wheelers it was so hard, they hardly even existed by the time the record came out. They named it "The First Step", but maybe "The Last Step" would be a more appropriate title - or "An Additional Step After The Last One", for that matter. If you say the first step for a band is to play the first show, then again, The Wheelers are here to prove this is not an easy one to take, and even if you have taken it, you will never know what happens next. The idea to form the band popped up in Gergő's (Gergely Kovács - bass, vocals) mind in the summer of 2006, when he already had a few songs ready, but the whole thing was left at that due to lack of time. The idea was not buried deep though, and the next year in March Gergő asked an old friend, Tibi (Tibor Barabás - drums) if he wanted to join. Well, as you can guess, he did, the difficulties were only yet to come: the duo still was in need of a guitar player. After months of research, they picked Gabi (Gábor Belukács - guitars). The band played its first show in January the next year, and the future looked bright for the three. Little did they know what was coming really soon - for reasons beyond their control -: Gabi had to move from Budapest, and it became nearly impossible to continue with the same line-up. Still, The Wheelers played a couple of shows, but as Gabi could no longer be involved on a long term, obviously it was time to decide how to go on. The founding members decided to pay due respect to the past by recording the songs - instead of simply letting them buried by the dust of forgetfulness - while at the same time looking into the future, so they started working on something new. (this "something new" is their new band The Grey Eminence, but that is another story.)
And regarding the present: The Wheelers did never officially break up, but the eleven song full-length is probably the only record for the band, it is very unlikely that a second disc will be ever made under that name. The First Step is a good collection of songs displaying all the different styles that had an impact on the band's music: hardcore, punk, rock, even hints of grind and metal - an obsession with fast rhythms serving as the link between the different influences.

The Wheelers are practicing for the upcoming studio session in September. The band is going to record guitar tracks for three new songs, tentatively called All That Money Can Buy, Falling On Deaf Ears and Without Or Within. Expect fast tempos, catchy riffs, some melodic singing as well as harsh vocals, and an overall positive attitude.
